Red Ribbon Week is a nationwide campaign that brings awareness to the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, smoking, other drugs, and violence.
Throughout Elkhorn North signs have been put up with slogans that advise students to not do drugs or alcohol. These signs were created by a teacher-led group called SADD, which stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions.
SADD advisor Mr. Davis said, “We get kids together so that they collaborate with others and keep them busy from doing other things.”
Every year SADD has a get together at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch. Fortunately, the number of participants is growing and this year they had over one hundred students attend. Along with Vala’s, they do activities like bingo and sardines around the school.
Along with these engaging activities, one of SADDs main focus is to inform about the drug and alcohol problem among young adults.
SADD Officer Quinn Carney said, “We are trying to spread awareness of what drugs and alcohol do to your body and how they can affect your future.”
One way that they are doing this is by informing students of the fact that by the time they graduate high school 47% of people their age have already used illegal drugs. Administrators want adolescents to make better decisions that care for themselves and others.
“We just hope that throughout their high school career, students make good decisions, and care about themselves and the people around them,” Davis said.
