Sophomore Madden Richardson devotes himself during both practices and matches by taking the opportunity to get any additional exercise during the offseason as well. His positive and outgoing personality encourages both his coach and teammates, especially on rough days.
“He has a really positive effect on all of us and brings great energy to practice,” sophomore Barrett Haun said.
Richardson uses his high strength and power to takedown his opponents in matches. He relies upon attending any extra practices, and weightlifting to develop a stronger work ethic.
“Madden’s work ethic is what I want to see in my athletes as a coach,” wrestling coach Teontae Wilson said. “He is always trying to get better.”
On Nov. 30, the wrestling team had their first dual at home vs. Nebraska City. Madden, 165 lb. The JV wrestler is working to drop to 157 lbs for a chance to start on varsity.
During the duel against Nebraska City, Richardson readily stepped up on short notice to replace a teammate who was ineligible for a match. Richardson had to fight hard in order to get to the top.
“Madden’s effort is always 100%,” Wilson said. “I know I can always count on Madden to bring his best effort no matter what the situation is.”
Richardson is a crucial part of the wrestling team while giving compassion and a strong sense of care for his team.
“Regardless if it is on the wrestling mat, football field, or in the classroom you know that he is going to do his very best,” Wilson said. “I know he is someone I can rely on to do whatever the team needs and I truly appreciate that.”
