Dedicating each season to a different commitment is demanding, especially for a high school student sophomore, but Jack Settles has made this his priority all throughout the first half of high school.
From a young age, Settles was interested in baseball, and played on high-level, competitive club teams. Carrying into high school this has shaped who he is.
“Baseball has altered my approach to life and how to meet my goals,” Settles said. “Even if you strike out you still have to show up the next at bat and do your best.”
Growing up surrounded in sports, Settles has grown and competitive spirit and wanted to be involved in more than just baseball.
With last year’s manager graduating, the football program needed a new person to be there for the team and do the behind-the-scenes work. Settles knew that was a role he could fill.
Every day after school he set up practice and stayed to assist the coaches. During games, the coaching staff relied on Settles to call plays and acts as a hype man for the players.
“Jack shows lots of emotion on the sidelines which really fires us up during games,” sophomore linebacker and slot receiver Jase Reynolds said.
Last winter, with the help of his peers, Settles founded the Elkhorn North Chess Club which is currently sponsored by math teacher Michelle Watson. The club meets every Wednesday morning at 7:20 AM.
Settles leads meetings by challenging his opponents and teaching them the art of the game.
“Lots of kids started growing interested in chess,” Settles said. ”It’s a great opportunity to be able to meet and play together.”
Constantly being on the go is a challenge, but Settles remains a hard worker and a high energy peer.
“Jack is a really unique kid who is okay with being himself,” baseball and football coach Anthony Dunn said. “[He] brings positive vibes to everything he does.”
