This year, freshman Luke Jefferson stepped up to fill the spot of broadcasting and commentating at Elkhorn North basketball games, bringing the action of ENHS basketball into the living room.
A lot of the work that goes into broadcasting is commentating, including researching both teams and noticing all of the special moments in the game.
“Luke is very talented for being as young as he is, and he has already grown a lot since he started broadcasting,” senior Brandon Urbano said.
Jefferson helps keep the viewer entertained by giving play by plays, and highlighting some key aspects of the game.
“For Luke, a lot of the work is studying our team and studying the opponent, and making sure that he is prepped for any big events that may happen during the game, or any key events to look out for,” Urbano said.
Jefferson works alongside classmate Jaden Tinglehoff, who claims that he has a real passion for the activity.
“It’s pretty fun, you know, he’s a nice chill guy, he’s not mean or anything.” freshman Jaden Tinglehoff said, “He takes it seriously, but he’s not overly complicated with it either.”
Broadcasting became more popular during COVID in 2020, but has stayed popular ever since then.
“It’s important that we get these games streamed because there are people that can’t make it to the games or live on the other side of the state who want to watch, and we also have parents/grandparents and media who watch.” Urbano said, “For each stream we average around 180-250 viewers per game, so that’s another audience that we are presenting our athletes to and allowing our athletes to be seen across the state.”
By broadcasting these games, Jefferson has been helping provide parents, grandparents, and sports enjoyers in general with a way to watch the athletes, even if they aren’t able to be there in person.
“He’s a really big sports fan,” Tinglehoff said, “It means a lot to him to have a sort of professional sports job, and I think it’s what he wants to do when he’s older.”
