The boys and girls 2023-2024 wrestling season has come to an end after the state championship tournament from Feb 15-17. This year was the second season of the girls’ wrestling team, giving them an independent program.
Although it was the first year for the ladies wrestling team, the team exceeded expectations. This first season was a great building block to initiate growth throughout the program.
“I hope to be able to come back and see how the program has grown. We put in a lot of hard work, and I hope the last two years will help the program grow in the future,” Senior Natalie Hecht said.
The boys’ wrestling team also excelled in their season, finishing in a high spot at districts and ended up qualifying multiple wrestlers for the state tournament. The group stresses the importance of hard work and dedication to put themselves in situations to excel.
“Keep at it, it’s a tough grind out there but you have to stay persistent at it,” Senior Spencer Schenarts said. “I was on junior varsity for three years, and now I’m on varsity making the state tournament, you just need to keep working.”
The wolves found themselves succeeding throughout the season, winning several tournament championships and runner-ups. The wrestling teams have made vast improvements.
“I feel this season went well… we finished third place at the EMC tournament which was huge,” Head Coach Teontae Wilson said. “I’m excited to return most of our starting lineup next year.”
The Wolves had an extremely strong season and while most of the team is returning, many seniors are moving on after graduation. With this, the program is looking forward to a bright future for wrestling
“We finished 3rd at districts and qualified six guys for state. All of this while having 10/14 new guys in the lineup,” Wilson said. “Overall I feel the guys got much better.”
