In a band rehearsal, players are surrounded by a variety of different sounds. The music is loud and vibrant. For most, this is the typical band experience, However, it’s a little different for freshman Dekker Rowe. 

Rowe’s story is an inspiring example of determination and passion in the face of adversity. Rowe has been hard of hearing for his entire life in both ears. He has mid-range hearing loss which is when someone struggles to hear the middle frequencies of sound. This includes communication with others and music. Despite living with moderate to severe hearing loss, Rowe has not let this obstacle stop his love for music as he participates in show band, jazz band, concert band, percussion ensemble, and marching band. 

“I can hear okay in the far end of the spectrum,” Rowe said. “But in talking ranges and in basic human life ranges, it gets a lot worse.”

Living with hearing loss has been a part of Rowe’s life since birth, and he has relied on hearing aids to boost certain areas of his hearing that are lacking. Rowe’s ability to adapt to these challenges and find ways to thrive in the world of band activities is quite the accomplishment.

“Dekker learned the music quickly and was really passionate about band, ” said freshman Zach Provaznik

Rowe’s commitment to music is evident by his involvement in show band, jazz band, concert band, percussion ensemble, and marching band. These are all demanding and dynamic musical settings, each with its own unique set of sounds and melodies. 

For most people, participating in such activities is a joyful and vibrant experience. However, for Rowe, it presents a different set of challenges due to his hearing loss. During covid, masks made it very difficult for Rowe to hear. The changes in volume and dynamics are hard to differentiate from because of his hearing loss. Rowe can’t always hear certain instruments or even the instructors’ instructions. 

“Decker’s great,” said band teacher Matthew Rom. ” He performs really well and he has a good attitude. 

Rowe’s commitment to his musical skills is also evident in the time he spends after school to improve his abilities. His determination and hard work have undoubtedly paid off, as he continues to have a positive impact on the band department and is recognized for his talent by those around him.

“He does really well in marching band, especially as the only freshman,” said senior Austin Allen. “He’s always really positive and makes everyone laugh.” 

Rowe’s story is a powerful reminder that obstacles can be overcome with perseverance, dedication, and a strong passion for one’s craft. His determination to pursue his love for music despite his hearing loss serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Rowe’s story is proof  that with unwavering dedication, one can achieve their dreams and make a meaningful impact in their chosen field.
