Junior Sophia Jones had one of her best tennis matches of the season last weekend at the Girls Varsity Invitational at Skutt Catholic. She came back after being down 6-2 in her singles match. The rest is history after she won her tennis match 9-8.
The match took place on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Omaha Skutt Catholic High School. The team had a victorious day of matches after sweeping all schools in all divisions. But the individual play was great from everyone, especially Sophia Jones.
Sophia has played against her Elkhorn rival many other times over the years, and it is always a battle until the end.
She never gave up, and kept fighting through even though she was down 4.
Senior Haylee Wolf said, “She started playing her game and setting herself up for success, she slowly gained more and more confidence and found her groove.”
Her persistence and determination to comeback helped her overcome the obstacle she faced in her match. Jone’s recent success reflects her last year state champion title in singles, because of her resilience to not lose and drive to win.
Sophia has been playing tennis all three years of attending Elkhorn North. Back in 2022 Sophia was also runner-up in the singles state championship. Also in 2022 she was awarded with the Omaha Tennis Award for 2022 Junior Female Emerging Player of the Year.
For the past three years Sophia has been dominant on the tennis courts as she is a State runner-up and also a State Champion. She looks to win her second state title bringing home another trophy later this month in May.
Wolf says again that “Sophia has grown so much as a player, she’s stronger and smarter. She has over time perfected her game and skills.”
