The Elkhorn North Girls Soccer program lost two crucial players in their midfield during the 2023 season, as well as four ligament tear injuries. This resulted in a season of perseverance.
“We had to learn how to work hard and play together as a team,” freshman center back Katie Clinkenbeard said.
At the first home game of the 2024 season the Wolves battled with the Waverly Vikings and came out victorious, 4-1. Senior Ava Spies scored two goals, while Meghan Coe and Mia Turner scored once.
Two days later, the team claimed another home victory against Lincoln Northwest, 4-1. Spies had two goals, and Sydney Wallace and Jordan Zielinski each scored one alongside her.
On April 2nd the wolves played the second ranked cardinals of Duchesne Cardinals, but fell 0-1 with a valiant effort.
“It was a tough game but we saw how good we could be when we worked together,” Coe said.
In search of another win, the Wolves played Hastings High School on April 11th and won 4-0. Spies, Zielinski, Ashley Phillips, and Kaylee Lake all scored one goal.
With a record of 3-7, the wolves faced the second seed Norris High School away on their senior night. After ending regulation and two overtime periods 0-0, they entered a shootout. Coe, Zeilinski, Spies, Kailynn Horeis, and Quinn Carney all buried their penalty kicks. Addy Maxell saved Norris’ Grace Kohler’s shot to win the game.
“Being the first class B team to beat Norris in the regular season in 4 years was a good moment for us and made our losing season feel better,” Spies said.
The wolves then took down Lutheran/Norfolk Catholic at home 6-0.
At the beginning of the sub-district tournament the lady wolves took down Concordia 10-0. To end the season, the Wolves fought against Bennington losing 2-1 in overtime.
This loss placed the Wolves at 17th in the state rankings, ending their season.
“We had a good season even though we didn’t reach our end goal,” head coach Troy Stoller said. “I am proud of the girls and thankful for this group of seniors.”
