After winning the 2022 and 2023 state championships, head coach Anthony Dunn and his team train day in and day out to make it three.
Working through the summer, athletes build their chemistry on the legion team. Sponsored by Equitable Bank, this team doesn’t wear the Elkhorn North name but they represent the talent within the school.
The 2023 legion team finished with a 36-13 record setting a precedent for the spring season.
“Legion makes our bond tighter and we all become better friends,” sophomore Jase Reynolds said.
Thursday March 21st during a battle with the Skutt Skyhawks, senior and GLUE guy Bodie Sellmeyer hit a grand-slam, and the Wolves won 11-7.
On April 4th-6th, at the Papillion-LaVista tournament, the Wolves defeated the Lincoln Southwest Knights 4-1 and took down the Gretna East Griffins 8-1 resulting in their third place finish.
“Before the Skutt game we weren’t clicking as a team,” Sellemeyer said. “After we found a new energy we started playing together as a team and it got the season rolling.”
The Wolves were able to beat the Waverly Vikings in the Eastern Midlands Conference (EMC) Tournament 3-0, after previously losing to them in the season opener.
On Monday April 15, 2024 senior pitcher and outfielder Colin Nowaczyk set the all-time state Class B record for consecutive games won while pitching.
“Colin, individually, has been great for us for three years now,” Dunn said. “These are absolutely team records as well, and kids along the way have done something in those games to help us win.”
On Friday, April 19th 2024 the team won the Bennington Tournament after taking down the Hastings Tigers 7-1, Gross Catholic Cougars 10-5, and the Elkhorn Antlers 11-3.
After a weekend of tornados three crucial games were canceled. In the last regular season game the wolves defeated the 2023 state runner-ups and top ranked Norris High School 8-4.
This victory sealed the teams Eastern Midlands Conference first place finish and gave them a bye in the first round of the district tournament.
Leading pitcher in the state, Nowaczyk, faced fellow University of Nebraska-Lincolin commit Jace Ziola in the district final against Skutt Catholic on Friday May 3rd. In a low scoring game, 2-1, the wolves punched their ticket to state and ended the skyhawks’ season.
“We were confident going into state this year and thought we could win it all,” junior Cole Debuse said.
On Saturday May 11th, in the first round of state, the wolves faced Blair High School and won 7-3.
After falling to Gretna East and Blair the following two days, the wolves season ended.
“Even though we did not get the ending we wanted, we fought hard and had a good season,” Debuse said.
