There are five seniors on the 2024 roster that have been here from the start: Grace Jesske, Haylee Wolf, Camryn Jacobsmeier, Courtney Hagestad, and Macy Falconer.
In the opening match the Wolves defeated the 2023 Class A state champions, Elkhorn South, 6-3.
“Beating the Class A champions from last year helped our confidence as a team,” sophomore Aubrey Phonephakdy said.
In the first two weeks of April the wolves defeated Elkhorn High School and Lincoln Northwest High School.
On April 17th the Wolves hosted the Elkhorn North Invite and came out victorious without losing a match. Sophia Jones and Phonephakdy won singles, while Camryn Jacobsmeier, Haylee Wolf, Courtney Hagestad, and Grace Jesske triumphed in their doubles matches.
On April 22nd, the Wolves hosted senior night where they swept Waverly. Six days later on April 30th the Wolves won the Lincoln Christian Invite.
To start off May strong the Wolves took down Omaha Skutt Catholic making their dual record a perfect 9-0.
“Going into the EMC tournament our team felt prepared and confident,” Jones said. “We were ready to work because there is always tough competition at EMC.”
Following their duel against Skutt, the Wolves competed in the Skyhawk Invite and the Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament. They swept both tournaments, earning the EMC champion title.
On May 11th the Wolves competed in the Kearney Dual Tournament and took home first place.
Entering state, the Wolves were seeded number one in all divisions. On May 20th at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln the Wolves competed in the first day of the state tournament.
Phonephakdy and Jones both won their first round singles matches. Wolf and Jacobsmeier, and Falconer and Jesske advanced to the second round after beating Wilber-Clatonia and Cornerstone Christian.
In the second round, Phonephakdy won against Blair, and Jones beat Hastings St. Cecilia. The doubles teams both won against Alliance and Ogallala. All divisions won in quarterfinals, advancing to the semis on May 21st.
On May 21st all divisions made it to the championship game. Jones placed first in #2 singles, Phonephakdy placed second in #1 singles and both doubles teams won first.
The Wolves secured their third consecutive Class B state championship.
“We were able to step up to the pressure as a team with many players going undefeated,” Jesske said.
