A new, energetic, hardworking, and kind counselor recently joined the Elkhorn North staff. Her name is Sabrina Ayala. She has been in education for a long time, and she has a son who is studying Applied Behavior Analysis at Midland University.
Ayala started her career teaching math in Louisiana, but then moved to Nebraska after her husband received a new job offer.
“My husband was in the hotel business, and so he got a job transfer up here,” Ayala said. “We moved up here in 1999.”
Over the summer, Ayala went on a road trip with her son, mom, sister, niece and nephew. They traveled 18 hours from Nebraska to Louisiana and then on to Destin, Florida. Ayala explains that the energy she has comes from her mom’s passion for life and adventure. According to Ayala this energy has not disappeared despite her mother’s growing age.
“Over Christmas break last year, my mom, my sister, my niece, and I celebrated my mom’s 90th birthday on a cruise,” Ayala said. “She’s just very lively. She can’t sit still. She’s always got to be doing something, so I definitely take after that.”
This energy drives Ayala to try new things, like bungee jumping or fulfilling a life-long goal of swimming with dolphins.
“I don’t sit at home very much, it drives me crazy, so I definitely take after her and do a lot of stuff.” Ayala said
Ayala brings this to school where she strives to help students pursue their best future. Her passion for helping students in this way is why she loves being a counselor
“I would help a lot more kids, rather than just teaching them math, I would help them in a lot of different ways,” Ayala said. “My favorite thing about being a counselor is trying to help students figure out what they want to do after high school.”
