Elkhorn North welcomes new counselor: Ms. Wright. Shay Ryan-Wright will be the counselor for last names beginning with Kr-Ri.
Wright comes from Ralston, went to high school at Papillion La Vista, and continued her schooling at Bellevue University. She is currently finishing her Master’s Degree at Doane University.
This summer she got married and moved to Omaha from Council Bluffs after accepting the job of counselor at Elkhorn North. Not only did she move states, but she also transitioned from being a behavior specialist to being a counselor.
Wright always wanted to work with kids and help them out whenever they needed it. For three years she worked as a behavioral specialist at a middle school in Council Bluffs. The shift from behavior specialist to counselor has been easy for her; it required her to keep the same skills but just transition them to high schoolers.
“Working with middle schoolers is very different from working with high schoolers,” Wright said. “At the end of the day it is making sure that the students have the support they need.”
Wright has been interested in kids’ behaviors since she was in high school herself.
Wright works to understand the needs and strengths of each student she works with and uses that knowledge to help them.
One factor in Wright’s decision to move to ENHS was the way the teachers and staff talked about the students and their feelings towards them.
“During the interview with Mrs. Dowd and Mr. Radicia and I could tell how much they cared about students and how much they wanted the students to be really successful,” Wright said.
