“Just because someone hurts you doesn’t mean you can simply stop loving them. It’s not a person’s actions that hurt the most. It’s the love.” Lily Bloom, from It Ends With Us by Collen Hoover said.
When I found out that there would be a movie of Collen Hoover’s viral book “It Ends With Us”, I was more than ready. I loved reading the book, so I had high expectations.
The movie was released on Aug. 9, 2024, by Sony Pictures Releasing. The main character, Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), moves to Boston, Mass. to open her new flower shop, Lily Bloom’s. Lily then meets a guy named Ryle (Justin Baldoni), and they fall in love.
Flashbacks from Lily’s first love with Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar) are frequently shown throughout the movie. Lily and Atlas’s experiences were important in Lily’s life and she didn’t want to let those memories go. This affects the ups and downs of Ryle and Lily’s relationship.
Compared to some movies, the flashbacks do not confuse watchers. Director Justin Baldoni does a breathtaking job of transferring important details from the book to the movie without confusing it.
It Ends With Us was full of incredinle scenes, but, my favorite was the ending. Lily spotted the pattern of abuse and changed it so it wouldn’t continue in further generations.
I’m not the only student that enjoyed the ending of the plot. Junior, Skyler Pithan, read the book and liked it so much that she also went to see the movie.
“I feel like it ended the way it should’ve,” Pithan said. “When they (Lily and Ryle) ended it when they should’ve. Lily was strong breaking their toxic relationship up.”
Although the movie essentially covered all important parts of the book, there were some key details from the book that were missing in the movie. In the book, Lily wrote in a journal when she was in high school. The journal prompts were always written to Ellen DeGeneres because Lily wished to be on her show.
Lily never threw away the letters which contained details of her and Atlas’s love. In the book, this becomes a problem because Ryle finds the letters in Lily’s closet and goes mad. The biggest abusive scenes were after Ryle read the letters.
“I think in the book, the letters to Ellen were such an important part of the plot,” Pithan said.
The brief letters written to Ellen include the details of Atlas Corrigan. Atlas and Lily overcame many obstacles due to their different lifestyles. What Lily didn’t know, was that Atlas would forever have a place in her heart.
Ryle was jealous of Atlas. His insecurities took over and created a mess of a relationship because Ryle read Lily’s letters.
The storyline essentially shows how not to love as it displays what shouldn’t be happening in a relationship. The story brings awareness to the danger of unhealthy relationships and how hard it can be to leave the person you love.
No matter how much you love someone, you have to love yourself more. Knowing your worth is the most important thing before heading into a relationship.
“I learned that if people are treating you a certain way, it’s okay to let go and move on for the benefit of yourself and other people,” Pithan said.
The details of how Lily was treated are openly written in It Ends With Us. In the movie, there was elements frequently left out.
Junior Sahler Smith agrees that reading the book is better than watching the movie. Smith recommends reading before watching.
“The book was so much more heartfelt,” Smith said.
It Ends With Us interest mainly teens and young adults. I personally, enjoyed the book more than the movie, but I highly recommend this movie to fans of the book. It Ends With Us is rated PG-13. The movie was good, but the book had more details.
I rate this movie three out of five stars, but the book is five out of five stars.
