One of the most important aspects of high school is the relationship between students and their sense of purpose. Some of the simplest ways for students to find an identity by engaging in clubs or sports. Clubs and sports give students the thrill of competition and the support of a team, as well as a boost in personal morale and confidence.
Clubs provide a range of benefits that go beyond just a hobby. Clubs offer advantages in both social connections and personal growth.
Sophomore Zen Wesselmann is a member of DEI club, (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), which fosters a supportive and inclusive environment.
“I think it definitely makes you feel good about helping people and also like you’re doing something,” Wesselmann said. “Everyone’s really nice, they help each other and boost each other, so it’s a good environment.”
Another club that has a great environment for students is DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). DECA is a club that competes with other schools in business competitions. Sophomore Abinash Chalise joined the club this year and noticed a growth in his happiness since joining.
“My leadership skills have grown, and I can communicate with a bunch of people very easily,” Chalise said. “It just makes me want to be there even more.”
Business and hobby clubs significantly boost student’s confidence through fostering teamwork and providing a much-needed break from the daily school grind.
Being a part of so many clubs can do more than just boost spirits for a student, it can also help a student with their academic future.
“I even noticed that my grades went up because I joined a lot of clubs,” Chalise said. “People think that you don’t have a bunch of time at home to study, but if you join clubs, they will help you.”
One of the most remarkable benefits of sports clubs is their ability to enhance social state of mind among athletes.
While other clubs improve the community, sports clubs, especially, try to develop a sense of belonging that boosts social morale.
Senior Shay Heaney is on the girls’ varsity basketball and volleyball team. By participating in Elkhorn North athletics, Heaney has found a sense of community.
“I’d say every single one of my friends is from one of my sports teams.” Heaney said.
Not only do clubs and sports create a personal identity for a student, but it can also enhance the school’s identity. Involvement can increase school spirit and create a sense of competition and teamwork among students.
“DEI makes our school look good, it should be about including everyone, and that makes you feel good.” Wesselmann said.
“Since I’m in sports, I want people to come watch us play and support us,” Heaney said. “I’m going to go watch other people too.”
Through clubs and other activities, high school is the best place for students to explore their interests. Elkhorn North is fortunate to have easy access to a wide variety of clubs and sports. These clubs boost morale, expand friendships, help education, and increase school spirit.
