I was excited to watch this documentary because volleyball in Nebraska, especially in my family, is very popular. I’m very glad that I did watch it because there was no disappointment for one second while I was watching this documentary. No Place Like Nebraska did a great job showing how hard the team worked and how they handled the pressure of being put on a pedestal as one of the best teams in the country.
The documentary started off strong, opening with the Huskers making history of the most seats ever in a volleyball game. They played at the Memorial Stadium, the home field for the football team, and had a total of 90,003 people attend the game. With a great start to the season, Nebraska had an amazing year, going into the national championship, 33-1. All of the girls on the team wanted to be champions so badly, but they didn’t get what they wanted and unfortunately got swept by Wisconsin.
After the loss, freshmen Harper Murray, out of pure anger, said in her first ever press conference that they would win the next three national championships. Murray received lots of hate from people all around the world, saying that she was going to be wrong and criticizing her performance as a player. She began to head into a deep slope with her mental health, not seeming happy playing the sport, as well as being involved in a DUI.
I have always thought that John Cook,Nebraska volleyball head coach, is amazing, and the things that he has done for all the girls on the team, like always boosting their confidence and making sure that they are ready to play is incredible. This documentary shined a bright light on exactly everything that I like. Before the 2024 season, Cook would take the girls to small towns in Nebraska, so everyone could see the team play and boost the spirits of both the team and the audience. No Place Like Nebraska also talks a lot about Murray. When she was in high school, she was ranked as one of the best players in the country. She was a great addition to the team, but she did not handle all of the rude comments the best that she could have. Other players like Bekka Allick, or Lexi Rodriguez should’ve been more involved in the documentary because they are great characters and a big part of the team.
I really enjoyed watching the rivalry games during the season when Nebraska played Wisconsin, or when Nebraska took on Michigan, the Kendall and Harper Murray reunion. I couldn’t forget the Nebraska and Iowa game, which is one of the Husker’s biggest rivals. I thought that the documentary did a good job on explaining the feelings of all the girls after they lost the championship and how it would affect their performance in the upcoming season. I think that it would be amazing to see the history of Nebraska volleyball, or to focus more on John Cook, Bekka Allick, and Leci Rodriguez. Another cool thing they should add is how the team functions with assistant coach, Jordan Larson. Larson was a former player for the Huskers, then went to the Olympics and won three gold medals. I would’ve loved to see her in the documentary. Though there was a lot of focus on Harper Murray, the things that they mentioned were very interesting, for instance, Cook mentioned that during the off season, Murray worked the hardest that he has ever seen, but there was no smile on her face when she was practicing. Murray said that she dreaded starting back up after ending her freshman season.
I learned that I can’t listen to mean criticism from others and that I need to focus on how I am performing, rather than other people’s viewpoints. This documentary did a very good job showing how negative comments can really damage someone’s mental health.
I hope that people who enjoy volleyball would watch this because it really brought more attention to volleyball, but also to the Nebraska team. I wouldn’t recommend this to people who don’t care about people handling pressure and how things affect mental health. The MPAA rating is PG-13 because there is some vulgar language, and also talks about DUI’s.
I give this documentary 4 out of 5 stars because it was fun to watch, I just wish that other people were used in the making of this documentary.
