Millie Mauch is a homeschooled sophomore who now plays volleyball for Elkhorn North.
On April 26, a tornado hit Nebraska leaving Mauch’s home destroyed. She and her family were forced to find a new place to live. This also came with the burden of switching high schools. In order to pursue her volleyball career, she attends 1st hour at Elkhorn North.
Mauch thrives as a defensive specialist and leads the team in ace percentage. More importantly, several teammates have felt the impact of Mauch’s calm and collective demeanor.
“She helps our team a lot because she is very calm and supportive,” sophomore Reagan Wallraff said.
Mauch was able to adapt to the new team, environment, and establish a strong connection. According to her, a great advantage was the fact that she already knew a lot of her new teammates.
“I knew most of the girls beforehand and they were all so welcoming,” Mauch said.
Transitioning between two very different schools and environments isn’t easy, but this helped Mauch in many ways. Not only did Mauch do a great job transitioning, the rest of the team did an amazing job introducing Mauch to her new teammates.
“She’s a really hard worker and an important part of the team,” Sophomore Kaitlyn Huff said.
Mauch shows how dedicated she is by working hard no matter what team she’s on and who’s on it. She’s supportive and brings a strong mentality to the team.
“She doesn’t take a play off in practice, and it translates to games,” coach Kaylee Prenosil said.
Mauch has been through a lot in the past year, yet has had a positive impact on the volleyball team in many ways, especially with her calmness on the court.
Elkhorn North volleyball is ranked 3rd in their district and will be going to state this year. Mauch and all her teammates have had a part in their success.
