On Oct. 17, the Elkhorn North cross country team competed in districts at Walnut Grove. In order to advance to state, a runner must place in the top 15 or the team must place top 3. Derek Rieck-Capellan placed first out of 42 runners, not only advancing to state, but being the first runner in Elkhorn North history to win districts.

Throughout the cross country season, Rieck overcame many obstacles. Due to multiple soccer injuries, he had to sit out for some of the cross country season, prohibiting his training.

“He bounced back fast from his injury,” freshman teammate Sean Cook said. “He was going out and running really fast.”

Rieck’s determination brought him back for the cross season leading to his significant success.

“He’s at practice everyday working hard and I think that really helped him improve,” junior teammate Noah Lange said.

Despite it only being his first year running, Rieck quickly adjusted to the training of this new sport which differed from his usual soccer practices. His hard work made him projected to place at state and ranked No. 9 on Prep Running Nerd

“He’s gotten used to racing and understanding that it takes consistent training to get better, understanding how to race, and having patience when racing,” head cross country coach Jordan Fuglestad said. “That’s the hardest thing to teach people.”

His coachable and upbeat attitude made him a role model for the team and influenced the atmosphere of the boys team.

“When you’re the fastest, you have a lot of the younger guys look up to you,” Fuglestad said. “They aspire to be like him.”

Teammates and coaches are impressed by Rieck’s newfound running abilities and are excited to see what more he can do. His hard work and enthusiasm will continue to make him a prime leader on the cross country team and will continue to drive him towards success.

Due to Rieck’s successful season, he will compete at the state meet in Kearney on Oct. 26 alongside his teammate, freshman Jude Martz.
