Many upperclassmen tutor other students for National Honors Society in order to obtain community service hours. While this is a common practice for NHS members, senior Mia Speranza has gone above and beyond with her duties in the counseling center.
“Mia is one of the leading students in service hours this year,” NHS Sponsor Lindsey Schlosser said.
Members are required to perform thirty service hours per school year. Speranza has completed over half of these hours solely through tutoring sessions.
“Mia is really patient and kind with the students she tutors,” counselor Meg Starman said. “She’s just doing a really great job.”
Speranza was assigned to tutor in math, but offers to help students with every subject. When a student finishes an assignment, she prompts them to work on homework for other classes. This creates an encouraging atmosphere for sometimes struggling students.
Along with tutoring, Speranza is enrolled in many rigorous courses herself. Her schedule includes AP Biology, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Statistics. Despite this strenuous workload, Speranza has maintained above a 4.0 GPA.
AP coursework can become very abundant, but nonetheless, Speranza can often be found in the counseling center during her study halls helping others; time she could spend on her own work.
“Even when Speranza’s student is finished or doesn’t need tutoring, she offers to help out in the counseling center,” Starman said.
Speranza’s selfless attitude has shined through her time in the counseling center this year and has earned her the honor of Wolf of the Week!
