In October Tyler Okonma, famously known as Tyler the Creator, released a new album by the name, CHROMAKOPIA. The last time he came out with a new album was 2021, so for some, this was a huge deal. The album contains 14 songs and features 11 different artists such as Lola Young, Doecii, GloRilla, and Lil Wayne.
CHROMAKOPIA displays a range of themes, from paranoia to the fear of commitment. Throughout the album, Okonma’s mom can be heard giving advice, and this adds more depth to the emotions he expresses. It’s cool to hear this because In his last song “I Hope You Find Your Way Home,” Okonma’s mom tells Tyler to “keep shining,” which goes along with some of the hidden themes.
Freshman Sam Weland has been listening to Tyler the Creator’s music for 3 years and appreciates his musical style.
“He’s able to be vulnerable with himself and his music and I really enjoy that,” Weland said.
The release of CHROMAKOPIA has also sparked much debate on social media about its hidden meanings. In his music video “St. Chroma” the beginning starts in black and white but eventually turns to color. This is one of my favorite details because “chroma” means color, and “copia” translates to abundance, so it literally means color abundance.
By the end of the album the songs get more personal and have less of an edge. “Like Him,” featuring Lola Young, begins with a piano section which is very different from his usual eccentric rap style. It shows a big transition and elevated maturity towards the meanings behind the album.
Sophomore Kenley Clements listens to Tyler the Creator on occasion but when she does it’s only her favorites.
“St. Chroma” is my favorite because it’s a hype song and I love the different styles mixed in with it.” Clements said.
My personal favorite song is “Darling, I” because of the excited feeling you get while listening. The song is upbeat and has a relaxed vibe, but It’s also about falling in love but not being able to commit, and as a teenager, it heavily validates those feelings.
I also appreciate “Judge Judy” not just for the beat, but because he talks about dealing with criticism and judgement from others. No matter who you are or what you do, you will always face judgement and this song highlights how important it is to just let it go and be yourself.
Okonma has come a long way from his earlier works, and CHROMAKOPIA displays a more mature version of himself and his life.
This album contains so many valuable ideals and messages that are so relevant in today’s society and it’s important to recognize the emotional vulnerability that Okonma puts out for the world to hear.
