2024 was the year of volleyball. It was the year of the first ever pro league in the United States, the Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF). The inaugural season in 2024 consisted of seven teams, the Omaha Supernovas, Atlanta Vibe, Columbus Fury, Grand Rapids Rise, Orlando Valkyries, San Diego Mojo, and Vegas Thrill. The opening season was successful and added an eighth team for the 2025 season, the Indy Ignite.
In total, the 2025 season will include 112 matches. Each team will have roughly 28 games, 14 home, and 14 away.
2025 opened its season in Columbus, Ohio between the Fury and the Mojo.
The first record that was set in the PVF was the 2024 season opener hosted in Omaha between the Supernovas and Atlanta Vibe. This match set the first record of the season with 11,624 people in attendance on Jan. 24, 2024, at CHI Health Center, home of the Supernovas.
The 2025 season is already looking like a bright start. The Supernovas had their home opener on Jan. 10, 2025, and they surpassed their record with 13,486 fans in attendance.
The 2025 playoffs should be around the week of May 15. The 2024 PVF champions were the Omaha Supernovas who played against Grand Rapids Rise at CHI Health Center. The dates for this regular season will go from Jan. 9 through May 4.
Currently the top 5 records in the PVF are all held by the Omaha Supernovas, ranging from 11,403 to 13,486 people in attendance. The highest attendance record was broken on Jan. 10, 2025, during their home opener against the Vibe.
The draft on Nov. 25, 2024, is what majorly changed this season. The draft consists of 5 rounds, and 40 picks in total. The draft included a large amount of fan favorites from the NCAA women’s volleyball.
The number one pick in the draft was Meritt Beason, from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, to the Atlanta Vibe. More picks included Lindsay Krause, Ally Batenhorst, and Kendra Wait all to the Supernovas, as well as Elena Scott and Anna Debeer to the Indy Ignite.
The exposure between the first and second season of the PVF changed dramatically. The league made deals with Roku which gives easier access for their viewers to stream from their own homes and on the go. This has greatly increased the number of streamers per game.
Joining the PVF this year is League One Volleyball (LOVB), the second league in the United States. LOVB has 6 teams each in Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Madison, Omaha, and Salt Lake City.
In its inaugural season it has Nebraska Hall of Famer Jordan Larsen on their Omaha team, as well as Texas and Penn State standouts Madison Skinner and Jess Mruzik.
LOVB has 60 games and in total the season is 14 weeks long, with their playoffs around mid April. LOVB also hopes to grow and expand in the next few years like the PVF.
Over the past few years there has been a large increase in volleyball, from college to professional, the impact volleyball has had will continue to grow over the years, and influence many.
