The 11th biggest sporting event in the world takes place again on the 9th of February. A football game that averages 123.4 million viewers, and gives many people a reason to party on a Sunday, showcases some of the best athletes in the world for about three and a half hours. But, the Super Bowl is more than just a football game. The game brings in hundreds of millions of dollars from advertisements and the NFL makes up to 1.3 billion dollars every year, which is about 738 times more money than regular season games generate. But, as controversy rises between the Chiefs, and two of the most hated teams enter the Super Bowl again, what will be different about this year?
Firstly, this year’s halftime performance will be performed by 37-year old rapper, Kendrick Lamar, who just won the 2025 song and record of the year, and his co-star SZA. These two artists have performed some of the biggest hits in the last decade and keep the fans interested during the break. Artists performing during the halftime show don’t usually get paid. The artists generate attention and relevance when performing on such a big stage, which usually leads to more success following the performance. Lamar is expected to be paid as little as $450 for his show in front of hundreds of millions of people, with support musicians making about $400.
Looking into the marketing and cost-side of the Super Bowl, the amount of money it costs to showcase an advertisement in 2025 is unreal. To have an ad for 30 seconds in this year’s Super Bowl, the cost would be more than $7,000,000. In 2000, an ad would’ve only cost around $2,200,000, which shows how successful ads during the Super Bowl have been over the last two decades. As some can remember, a Tubi commercial tricked millions into believing someone had stolen the remote during the game, causing thousands of screams and panics across the country. The advertisement worked though, as Tubi is now on pace to become a billion dollar company before the end of the year.
Recently a less successful part of the Super Bowl has been the execution of the turf the players play on. In 2023, athletes and viewers experienced extremely slippery turf, but in the following Super Bowl the turf was seemingly fixed. George Toma, also known as the “Sodfather” claimed that the turf was overwatered for Super Bowl 57 and was corrected when producing the turf for the following Super Bowl. Hopefully he and his team are able to produce another great playing field for Super Bowl 59.
According to articles and posts from fans of the NFL, a vast majority of people claim that they will not be watching this year’s Super Bowl. People strongly believe that the league and the refs have impacted the outcome of games in the Chief’s favor. So many people believe this that articles to reassure the fans have been posted stating that this is almost an impossible reality. In 2007, a referee was caught betting on NFL games that he was officiating in, which led to him being imprisoned for fifteen months. Claims have been made that if there was any similar situation going on there would be actions done to stop it.
Super Bowl 59 is bringing in a lot of drama and mixed opinions, but as people claim to be “boycotting” the Super Bowl, it will still be without a doubt one of the biggest sporting events of 2025. Expect a lot of hate towards the Chiefs and the refs as millions of fans believe they are working together, but nonetheless, they are extremely close to the first ever 3-peat in NFL history. This game is set to be another great Super Bowl, and the time and effort to prepare this game deserves to be appreciated, so put the controversy to the side and enjoy some football.
