In April, Elkhorn South hosted the annual NSBA Jazz Festival, where jazz bands from all over the state competed for titles. Senior Aidan Carlson, who won “Outstanding Soloist” as well as an award for head snare, was recognized for his incredible musical talents.
“He plays piano mainly, but he’s so talented he can kind of just play whatever he wants,” senior Mason Miller said.
Carlson’s solo was completely improvised, making the win even more impressive. Carlson, who also plays in ENSYNC, has lots of experience as a creative artist.
“He composes and changes a lot of the pieces that we do,” band director Ben Petrmichl said. “He’s very creative and understands music very well.”
Carlson also works very hard, dedicating lots of time towards practicing and preparing for State. Carlson’s true love of music is shown through his drive to improve.
“We spend a lot of time rehearsing at school, but he (Carlson) also works a lot on his own at home,” Petrmichl said.
This was not Carlson’s first set of awards, as he also won outstanding solo at Westside, and awards with ENSYNC so his state win is not too surprising to those who know him well.
As a senior, Carlson is very experienced at performing. Being the only senior in the jazz band percussion section, Carlson also acts as an unofficial leader and role model for the younger band kids. Sophomore Dekker Rowe knows Carlson through band.
“He’s very kind, very musically talented, and funny,” Rowe said.
This solo win, clearly well-deserved, also highlights Carlson’s personality. Besides focusing on music, he is ambitious and works for his goals.
“He’s really smart and very goal oriented,” Senior Sai Sake said. “If he wants something, he’ll go for it.”
