Under the Friday night lights, the Elkhorn North Wolves gave fans their first glimpse of the upcoming season in the annual Gatorade Scrimmage, where both offense and defense showed flashes of promise.
The first quarter started off varsity versus JV, with our three D1 commits leading the way: Jase Reynolds- UNL commit, Barry Fries- ISU commit, and Alex Uchtman- SDSU commit, with our returning head quarterback, Ethan Beachy, who was third in Class B passing yards last season.
This powerhouse led the charge to varsity beating the next best varsity players in the first quarter with defense showing an impressive performance, shutting them out. While the defense looked good, so did the offense as they were able to move the ball well through the ground and air. The Wolves have depth this year in the running game with juniors Anderson Taylor, and Charlie Riesselman, and senior Nate Trofholz getting varsity reps at running back. Quarterback Ethan Beachy was successful throwing and running the ball during the game with completions to several receivers for short and long gains. One touchdown came from Beachy’s throw to Uchtman over the top of the defense. On top of the passing touchdown, Beachy had a scramble touchdown to secure varsity’s win in the first quarter.
Other than the first and second quarter of action there was the annual Junior Cheer halftime show, where grades from kindergarten to fifth grade participated in a cheer routine. This drew more fans into the stadium, supplying the football team with more Gatorade for their long season.
After halftime the teams were split up evenly by the coaches, with two freshman quarterbacks: Austin McMurtry and Pierson Kaufman leading the way. They showed flashes throughout the time they played, making plays up and down the field. The second half was slower with only one touchdown, thrown in the final play of the game. Austin McMurtry threw the TD to junior Koda Mielak. The final score was 28-6.
The first official game of the 2025 season is on Friday August 29. The Wolves look promising as they pursue the school’s first ever football State Championship.
