The Elkhorn North softball team was very successful in their season opener, dominating the Omaha Bryan Invite, a tournament with schools from all over the Metro. Over the four games they played from Aug. 21-23, the softball team outscored their opponents 51-1.
Their dominance was a team effort, with everybody contributing. While the team succeeded across the board, one contributor shined, Paige Asher. This is the sophomore’s second season on varsity and started off stronger than ever.
Asher pitched 8 innings over three games, giving up 2 hits, walking one person and giving up one run. She faced 28 batters and struck out 21 of them. This translates to a 75% strikeout percentage, a truly astonishing number.
“Paige is a competitor,” head coach Kelsey Maxell said. “She is always hungry to improve and be better.”
The softball team worked extremely hard leading up to the tournament. Countless hours of practice towards pitching, hitting, and fielding in order to be a successful team.
“We started practices in June,” senior Naomi Cameron said. “We implemented a few things, teamwork wise. We made families within the team that have helped us push each other and the team forward.”
Since June, the team has put the work in, practicing three times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Their hard work has shown with their strong pitching staff and a stellar defense backing them up.
“Paige worked extremely hard in the off season to gain better command and it is really going to pay off this year for us this year,” Maxell said.
