The Wolves football team has now spent six weeks at the No. 1 spot in Class B, following their fifth win by more than 30 points this season. With a 51-7 win over the Antlers and an average of 7.3 yards per rush and 12.9 yards per pass, the Antlers defense had no answers to the Wolves.
A performance of this quality sends a message not only to Elkhorn High, but also to the remaining matchups for the Wolves.
Against the Antlers the Wolves had 369 total yards, their second lowest total this season, yet still nearly 200 more yards than Elkhorn.
Averaging nearly 100 more all-purpose yards than last season, the Wolves have stood out as the strongest offensive team in Class B.
“Executing has been a big thing on defense and no one is being selfish,” senior linebacker Barry Fries said.
The Wolves have outscored their opponents 270 to 70 this season, and limited three teams to seven points or less. With four interceptions for 91 total yards, and three fumble recoveries for 71 total yards the Wolves’ defense has given the offense great field position game after game.
“Everyone knows the end goal, which is making it to Memorial Stadium,” Ethan Beachy, quarterback and Offensive Player of the Month, said.
Since the Wolves loss last year in the state semi-finals, they are determined to change that outcome given it’s their last year in class B, as they go on to face the reigning champions, Skutt Catholic, in week seven.
