Golf is not only a physically tough sport, but the mental aspect of it can determine who succeeds. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from a mistake, is crucial to being great. Avery Peter is the perfect example of resilience in golf.
The goal of golf is to finish the course with the least number of strokes and to shoot under par; the average number of strokes to complete each hole.
The Elkhorn North girls golf team placed 1st at class B districts, obtaining a spot to play at state. The winning team score was a 332, but one player led the pack. Peter placed 1st at the district tournament, with a score of 77 (+5). Her teammates followed closely behind, but Peter was able to pull out the win.
The Class B state tournament took place in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Peter, including five other teammates, traveled to compete in this tournament. The team ended up being runner up, with three out of the five players placing in the top ten.
“She works really hard and she puts a bunch of time into this,” junior Caylee Mack said, “ I think that her hard work has definitely paid off, and it definitely shows in her scores.”
Peter led the group placing fourth, with a combined score from the two days being 165 (+21). Her determination to continue to push despite challenges, paid off for her to succeed. Her perseverance is something that is admired by her teammates.
“She has been scrambling like crazy and it helps take pressure off other parts of her game,” varsity golf coach Calvin Thompson said.
Peter is not only a great player, but also a crucial teammate. She inspires others to be better, and is a role model for others on the team. The joy she brings to the course motivates players to be their best.
“It’s the relationships she builds with those around her, the leadership and example that she sets, and the way she goes about her business that we are most proud of,” Thompson said.
