Some people swear by them, some do not believe they have any use, but no one can deny that the use of crystals has become increasingly popular over the past year.

While one reason crystals are now gaining some popularity is from TikTok trends, they have existed as a form of medicine for thousands of years. Crystals are believed to help promote good energy, help users relax, rid the body of negative energy, and bring physical and emotional benefits. The use of crystals comes from Buddhist and Hindu beliefs.

According to Stanford.edu, crystals have many different, ancient uses in various religions and cultures. Western Christianity used crystals in writing and for symbolic use. In the medieval times, crystals were used to describe beauty, and people believed they had spiritual powers. Ancient Egyptians used crystals for protection and health, and also used them cosmetically.

While not used much for medicinal purposes anymore, according to crystalage.com, “in the 1980s, with the advent of the New Age culture, the use of crystals and gemstones began to re-emerge as a healing method.”

With apps such as TikTok, where trending videos can be the start to huge trends, it is no wonder why they have become so popular lately.

Sophomore Haley Dickinson just began using crystals in February after seeing TikTok videos of others using them, and she was curious to see how they worked.

While crystals not only are appealing to the eye, they also are said to have special properties. There are many different types of crystals, and they all have different uses. For one example, clear quartz is used to amplify energy, and it is one of the most popular crystals.

Some users have a favorite crystal for various reasons; whether it is because of the way it looks, it’s use, or other aspects.

“My favorite crystal is Rose quartz.  It inspires self-love, stimulates imagination, helps attract new love, clears anger, and it helps proper circulatory function,” Dickinson said. “It’s also very pretty.”

Crystals can be used as often or as little as possible, as it just depends on the user. While some crystal users use them to meditate multiple times a day, others just use them when they feel they need to. Some crystals such as rose quartz, amethyst, and hematite can be placed in various places in a home for different purposes. Dickinson meditates with her crystals a few times a week and carries a few around with her throughout the day.

While there are many people who doubt the effects of crystals, there are also many who truly believe they changed their lives. With a large fraction of crystal users on TikTok sharing their experiences with them, it is apparent that it really just depends on the person with crystal usage. Dickinson said, “My Rose quartz crystal has helped me learn self-love.  When I meditate with it often I notice that I have more confidence.”

Some people do yoga, some people go to church, and some people meditate and use crystals. The use of them will most likely always be questioned by others, but a large number of people will still continue to use crystals and swear by them for the rest of time.
