On March 20, the Wolves baseball team played their second game of the season, with sophomore Connor Wurdeman securing a 6-5 victory in the 8th inning against Standing Bear.
Wurdeman batted fourth in the game and went one for four heading into this last inning. Being so high in the batting order, he is expected to be a guaranteed hit. Wurdeman went into the box with only one hit and had to come through in the most important moment of the game, extra innings.
“I had a quick talk with Connor before his at bat and just told him to do what he has done all season,” head coach Anthony Dunn said. “He didn’t seem fazed which is very unusual for a sophomore in his situation, he calmly told me he had this, and with how he has performed for us in the past I had no reason to doubt him.”
As the only freshman on the team last year and one of two underclassmen on the varsity roster this year, Wurdeman could be expected to face challenges with maturity and experience. He has proven that he is no regular underclassmen.
“He is a great leader for our team,” said junior first baseman Charlie Riesselman. “Even though most of us are older, he brings great energy and positivity to the team. He’s the same person going 4-4 as he is 0-4 and that consistency in his mood is just as important as what he does on the field.”
With a majority of the spring season left, the Wolves hope to carry this momentum with them all year as they work to win a district championship and even a state championship, and Wurdeman’s ability to come through in big moments will help them reach this goal.
