Whether on or off the stage, sophomore Will Swagler brings the energy. Swagler’s bright personality and natural confidence makes him stand out.
Swagler has been dancing for 10 years and along the way has found support from his parents and teammates.
This year, Swagler tried out for the dance team, and landed a spot. The try-out process is very rigorous, so making the team is an achievement in itself. Head coach Kelsey Hillman explains the steps needed to complete a try-out.
“We have a three day tryout where they learn dance routines, technique, and have an interview,” Hillman said. “Will truly excelled at all of those things and we were very excited to have the first male dancer on the team.”
Swagler dances competitively for Kitty Lee Dance Studio. At Kitty Lee, Swagler loves Contemporary and Tap, but when dancing for the school, he enjoys football games and pep-rallies.
“I enjoy having school spirit and getting to cheer other people on,” Swagler said, “There’s not many opportunities to showcase that anywhere else.”
Since joining the team, it’s been a seamless transition. Swagler’s teammates love to have him around. Junior teammate Loghan Evert notes his dedication and energy.
“Will brings one-hundred plus energy and always comes to practice with a smile,” Evert said. “He makes it a better place for all of us.”
Swagler’s gender does not change his role on the team in any way. He participates in the same getting ready process as the others and the team has not had to alter any routines.
“If anything we’ve been able to increase our difficulty level because Will brings a bigger technical element to the team,” Hillman said.
Swagler’s presence on the dance team has transformed its future, opening opportunities to anyone that shares the same passion for dance. His involvement showcases the diversity of Elkhorn North and truly breaks barriers.

We need more of this. Thank you for breaking a barrier, a barrier broken is a good one. Especially breaking a stereotype is always a good thing!

We need more of this. Boys in a sport like dance shouldn’t be frowned upon or result in them being bullied. Swagler truly breaks barriers with this, and we (ideally) should see more mixing between genders in sports, even if it’s stereotypically ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’, like dance is.
