On Jan. 31, 2026, the Elkhorn North varsity wrestling team competed at the Eastern Midlands Conference (EMC) Tournament where senior James Ferguson broke 150 career wins.
Ferguson is the first ever wrestler in Elkhorn North history to break 150 wins, making his achievement even more notable.
“James is a scoring machine as he is always looking to score points,” head boys wrestling coach Teontae Wilson said. “If you look at our record board, his name takes up a good portion of the board.”
Elkhorn North has had a consistent history of state qualifiers from both the girls and boys’ teams. Ferguson holds evidence to this as he is a three-time state qualifier, with him likely qualifying for the fourth time this year.
Additionally, Ferguson is a key member of the wrestling program due to his ability to score points early and often. He has had numerous technical falls, a term for when a wrestler secures a specific point lead over their opponent, throughout the season. These leads are usually for 15-point gaps in a high school match.
Not only does Ferguson stand out as an individual wrestler, but he also shines as a leader. As a senior and key competitor on the team, Ferguson is always ready to help out and put in the needed work and effort it takes to lead the team to a state title.
“He (Ferguson) is very committed to the sport,” senior wrestler Madden Richardson said. “He has also set a lot of records and is probably one of the best kids on the team right now.”
As the team advances on to state within a few weeks, they hope to win a title for the first time in Elkhorn North history. With Ferguson guiding them, it is evident that the team can accomplish much at state.
“James has set the standard for our relatively young program,” Wilson said. “He has made a significant impact since his first year.”
