On March 22 and April 12, 2024, rap artist Future and music producer Metro Boomin released consecutive albums, the first being named “We Don’t Trust You,” and the second being named “We Still Don’t Trust You.” This is the duo’s first collaboration project since their 2016 album named, “Purple Reign.”
This album was a pleasant surprise for many Future fans, as it is his first album release since 2022 after staying consistent with releases, sometimes as many as two albums a year. As for Metro fans, this album was highly anticipated after his recent success on the soundtrack for the film, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” which featured many big-name artists like Lil Wayne, Offset, A$AP Rocky, and the project, “Heroes and Villians,” which included features from Future, Don Tolliver, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, 21 Savage and more.
Both of the projects released by Future and Metro feature many artists from their past albums. The first album released reached number one on the Billboards which marks his ninth number one album. His first No. 1 album was in 2015, pointing to Future’s success with these two. From angelic choruses to generational rap beef, these two projects provide a lot of diversity in music.
Young Metro (ft. The Weeknd)
This is the second track on the project “We Don’t Trust You,” and this was an instant hit with fans. The first half of the song is Future’s where he starts with an amazing beat drop and an exciting verse. The major highlight of this song is The Weeknd. He comes in about halfway through the song and serves beautiful background vocals that mesh together extremely well with Future’s verse. A great track to follow up the intro with that sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Ice Attack
Following right after Young Metro, this track starts off sounding like a more laid back, enjoyable track. The beat starts slow and Future starts off rapping slowly. I thought the song was just okay, until about a minute into the song when the beat completely switches into what feels like a completely different song. It is overall a great track and worth a spot in the playlist, and transitions into the next hit track.
Type Sh** (ft. Travis Scott and Playboi Carti)
This song starts off scorching hot, the beat transitioning directly from the song before. The features from Travis Scott and Playboi Carti are what really makes this track. These guest appearances helped bring the track to the top-10 on the billboards. Travis Scott’s feature is perfect for the song, he captures your attention right away with a more melodic beat switch. And as for Playboi Carti’s feature, it was highly anticipated with the dominant run he’s been on since the start of the year. He wen’t from dropping almost nothing for three straight years, to leaking many tracks and having guest appearances on We Don’t Trust You, Kanye West’s Vultures 1, and on Camilla Cabello’s new single, “I LUV IT.” This track will have great longevity and definitely deserves a spot in your playlist.
Like That (ft. Kendrick Lamar)
This track took the world by storm, and will be remembered for generations to come as the song that ignited arguably the biggest rap beef of all time. The focal point of this song is Kendrick Lamar’s feature, where he basically took over the song. His whole verse was taking shots at two very popular artists, Drake and J. Cole. The first one that could be seen as a diss is his line where he states, “It’s a lot of goofies with a check.” This was seen by fans as a shot to Drake’s collaboration with Nike, saying that he doesn’t deserve it. In Drake and J. Cole’s track First Person Shooter off of Drake’s most recent album, there was a part that established Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar the, “Big Three,” of rap. In this track, Kendrick claps back by saying he is in fact not part of their big three, and that it is just, “Big Me,”. Aside from all of the chaos caused by this track, it is a fantastically produced song. Metro Boomin used samples from hip-hop classics, “Everlasting Bass,” by Rodney O and Joe Cooley and, “Eazy-Duz-It,” by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren. It has been sitting at Number 1 on the billboards for 3 consecutive weeks, and for good reason.
Cinderella (ft. Travis Scott)
This is my personal favorite song to come from either of the projects. The beat is extremely melodic and easy to enjoy, as compared to the first half of the album which was much more fast paced. This track was awaited for a long time by many fans, as the song was leaked while it was still unreleased, so fans including myself were ecstatic to see this track on the album. Both of their voices match perfectly with the melody and mesh together extremely well. Throughout the song Travis Scott is performing his infamous background vocals and delivers his own verse that serves the song perfectly. This song 100% deserves a spot in anyone’s playlist, it’s a diverse song that could be enjoyed regardless of what genre you prefer.
Out Of My Hands
This is the first song to come from We Still Don’t Trust You on this list. The second project is structured much differently than the first, as there are two separate, “discs,” for the album. The production behind this song really intrigues me, from the beginning loop to the very last word Future says in the track. It’s a very enjoyable song and like Cinderella, can be listened to regardless of what music genre you prefer. It’s one of the more laid back songs from either of the albums.
All to Myself (ft. The Weeknd)
The Weeknd was a focal piece to both albums. He could be heard in the background vocals in the intro to the second album We Still Don’t Trust You, as well as three other songs throughout the projects. With him, Future and Metro took more of an R & B approach with the songs featured by The Weeknd. With the deep voice of Future and the angelic choruses from The Weeknd, their voices mesh really well together. Their duo and collaborations was one of the major highlights of these albums.
Nights Like This
This song is by far my favorite to come from We Still Don’t Trust You. Kind of like the previous track, it takes more of an R & B laid back approach that makes for an enjoyable listen. It has a very catchy chorus that has been stuck inside my head for days. The hook to the beat is really good, and makes you anticipate what the rest of the song will bring. I’ve heard from some fans that they wanted maybe a Travis Scott feature on this song, saying that the beat was, “made for him,”. Regardless of feature or no feature, this is still my personal favorite song from We Still Don’t Trust You.
Red Leather (ft. J. Cole)
Huh? Yeah, that was my first reaction when I heard J. Cole on this track. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always a delight to have a feature from one of the greatest rappers to walk this planet. But didn’t he just get dissed by Kendrick Lamar and Future just weeks before? And not only that, didn’t J. Cole respond to their diss on his song, “7 Minute Drill,” and then mere days later pulling it from all streaming platforms?? Regardless of any beef that may have been going on behind the scenes, Future and J. Cole made a masterpiece with this song. It’s an extremely enjoyable love song that goes through the trials and tribulations of relationships. Just when we thought the rap beef couldn’t get any deeper, the next and last feature of the album stirs the pot.
Show of Hands (ft. A$AP Rocky)
This song only added to the stemming rap beef that seems to be revolving around these albums. Not only was it a shock to hear A$AP Rocky on a Future and Metro Boomin album, but it was also a shock to hear A$AP send shots at Drake. Fans suspect that this conflict has been stiring for a long time, all the way back to when A$AP began dating Rihanna, Drake’s ex-girlfriend. Although watching all of this unravel has been good to watch, it is also kind of upsetting to see once friends just completely go at each other. Some could even argue you could credit Drake for bringing A$AP to the top of the rap game. Again, regardless of any conflict between bars, A$AP served a great verse that goes well with Future’s. It’s a great song that hypes you up and was an immediate add to the playlist.
In conclusion, both projects are incredible and provide a wide variety of music that is really enjoyable by almost anyone with any music taste. For the R & B fans, there are 4 songs that feature The Weeknd and many more songs by just Future that bring a laid back, relaxed song. And for the rap fans, there are plenty of killer verses and unique production that bring rap fans the Future that they want.
On the morning of April 16, 2024, Metro Boomin and Future announced that they will be going on tour starting late this summer. Many fans, including myself, are ecstatic to see two rap masterminds performing their art all over the country.
