With the 2024-2025 soccer season not ending the way the boys soccer team wanted it to, they are ready to come back this year stronger than ever. The team is ready to put in the work to achieve the goal of winning a state title game at Morrison Stadium for the first time in program history.
“After our loss in state last year, we have set our goal on returning and winning the state championship,” senior captain Mason Mercer said.“The entire team has shown up and worked hard at all preseason events.”
The wolves have been working hard in the offseason on and off the field. When they got the chance they were outside getting touches, but when stuck inside they were conditioning around the school or in the gym lifting. They have been doing this since Dec. 1, getting ready for the transition to March 3, the official start date of spring sports. These conditioning practices have been held by students and leaders on the soccer team.
“We not only got better as soccer players but also developed bonds and team chemistry that will hold through the season and lead us to a state title,” Mercer said.
Holding these conditioning practices has helped everyone get closer on the team, especially the freshman. Getting to know everyone’s names before the first practice is beneficial, allowing good team morale and chemistry.
After the first week of practice the Wolves had their Gatorade Scrimmage on Monday March 9. They played three separate 20 minute games. The last scrimmage of the night was called the Captains Cup, which was drafted by the four captains on the team: senior Mason Mercer, senior Jack Olson, senior Jonah Santos, and junior Zac Keenan. This game was a friendly competition between the team, allowing for bragging rights and a small trophy. The team that ended up winning in penalty kicks was the team led by Olson and Keenan.
During the scrimmages the coaches are able to decide the starting eleven for the season,
With the first game of the year coming closer, the Wolves are ready to start the year off hot and beat rivals Elkhorn High on March 23.
“We have one goal in mind”, Boys Soccer Coach Jeremy Vokt said. “That is to play in the state final game on May 19 at 4:30.”
