In the busy cafeteria, Amy McNat’s passion for her job transforms the lunch line into a place of connection and joy.
McNat has dedicated her life to food service and spreading happiness through her delicious meals. Her career began in a nursing home, where she worked for 20 years, followed by working in Millard Public School’s food service. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she supported her brother by working in a warehouse.
“I loved it,” McNat said. “It was just easy and fun to do and I’m glad I went that route.”
Now, McNatt enjoys her role at Elkhorn North, where she has been a beloved figure since the school opened.
“I like cashiering because I get to see all the kids and say hi to them,” McNat said. “The older generation is funny and not scared of you.”
She brightens up the lunch line by smiling and greeting everyone who comes through.
“I look forward to going to lunch everyday because she’s super nice,” freshman Doug Towey said.
This simple act of kindness spreads positivity to all the students.
“Every morning when I go in to get breakfast, she always makes small talk with me,” sophomore Xavier Johnson said. “It just makes my day a lot better.”
McNat’s cooking has always been her method to bring people together. Every meal is more than just food; It’s a gathering of friends and family.
“We have a big, huge Valentine’s Day meal,” McNat said. “My kids all know that this is the holiday that we don’t have a million things going on.”
When she’s not caring for others through food, she enjoys reading mystery thrillers, especially those by Dot Hutchinson, and spending time with her husband and their pitbull, Spots.
McNat’s dedication to her job and the joy she brings to the students has made her a beloved figure. Whether she’s cooking up a storm or sharing a friendly smile, McNat’s impact is felt.
