It’s more than a perfect haircut, blowout, or touch-up—it’s science, involving anatomy and chemistry. To perform services on skin, hair, and nails safely, the stylist must know how to use different products, as everyone is different.
Some students have begun to strive for a lifelong career in expressing creativity. Cosmetology and esthetician schools have become a popular destination for students who want a creative outlet. Beauty schools offer various pathways for students to launch a career, and hands-on experiences with hair, makeup, nails, and skin. Students are enabled to express themselves and showcase their talents.
In Nebraska, the top two beauty schools are Capitol Beauty School and Xenon A Stephanie Moss Academy. There was only one senior from Elkhorn North’s class of 2022 who planned to attend cosmetology school. After that, there were no other students who reported going to a beauty school until five seniors from the class of 2025 attended a beauty school.
Cosmetologists focus on hair services like styling, cutting, coloring, extensions, and many other treatments. But it is often misunderstood with estheticians who provide facial treatments, chemical peels, waxing, and microneedling.
Since beauty school has so many particular aspects one can specialize in, it is important to develop a strong and loyal clientele, which can be accomplished through sharing the talent.
“Social media gets your work out there and helps find the target audience,” senior Camdyn Ordfield said. “Without social media, nobody would know about you except your friends.”
Enrolled students often share their work across Instagram and TikTok to gain a larger audience. In doing so, they also tend to connect with others who have similar interests. Connections are beneficial in this profession because their incomes are based on the number of clients they have.
The future for beauticians is complex, and it’s more than working behind a chair. From working in an owned salon to working with celebrities, there are multiple intriguing avenues for a successful career, but the most common is self-employment. Working with celebrities is a competitive choice, but with the right drive and passion, it is more than possible.
“I want to help everyone feel the beauty that they have,” senior Skyler Pithan said. “The services that I do will make my clients feel like their best selves.”
When you look good, you feel good, and that’s exactly what these workers help achieve.
