The Elkhorn North Wolves entered this year’s state playoffs with one goal in mind — to bring home the school’s first-ever football state title. Fueled by a determined senior class, the Wolves stormed into the postseason with energy, confidence, and heart.
In the opening round, Elkhorn North dominated with a 32–0 shutout victory, led by backup quarterback Austin McMurtry, who stepped up after starting QB Ethan Beachy went out of the game with a MCL injury.
“We all trusted each other and played for something bigger than ourselves,” McMurtry said. “Everyone knew what was at stake, and we didn’t want to let our seniors down.”
Beachy made his long-awaited return the following week in the quarterfinal matchup against the Bennington Badgers. Despite his comeback, the Wolves struggled to find their rhythm against a tough Bennington squad, ultimately losing 42–7. The loss ended Elkhorn North’s season, and the high school careers of a senior class that helped elevate the program to new heights.
“This group of seniors poured everything into this season,” said senior captain Shane Heida. “We wanted that state title more than anything, but even though we came up short, we know we built something special here.”
While the Wolves’ playoff run ended sooner than they hoped, their effort and resilience throughout the season will be remembered. With a talented group of underclassmen returning next year, the foundation these seniors built will help Elkhorn North back to the playoffs in the transition into Class A.
