Junior quarterback Austin McMurtry took the field last Friday against Lincoln Pius X. He wasn’t expecting to be the one leading the offense, but when senior quarterback Ethan Beachy went down in the first quarter with a knee injury, McMurtry was ready to rise to the occasion. Coming off the bench in the first round of the state playoffs, McMurtry delivered a great performance, leading the Wolves to a dominate 32-0 victory.
In his unexpected starting role, McMurtry showcased confidence and leadership well beyond his level of experience. He threw for 182 yards and one touchdown, spreading the ball efficiently and keeping the opposing defense on their heels.
What made McMurtry’s performance even more impressive was the pressure of the situation, stepping in midgame during a playoff matchup with the season on the line. Instead of being overwhelmed, he embraced the challenge and helped secure a crucial win.
“He’s been balling out this year but the real growth is his vocal leadership and being able to be a guy his teammates look towards in good or bad moments,” senior quarterback Ethan Beachy said. “Also his film study and coaching ability has improved significantly, allowing for more confidence while playing.”
Austin’s readiness and resilience serves as a reminder that preparation and perseverance pays off, even when the opportunity comes unexpectedly. With the Wolves advancing to the next round, McMurtry has shown he’s ready for whatever comes next.
